Dream Home (2010)
Dream Home is a Hong Kong slasher film that gives an extremely dark and gory take on the housing market. A woman is working 2 jobs in hopes of buying her own dream apartment with a view of the harbor. As a child, her family was evicted from their low-income housing to make way for development of more expensive flats, and she vowed she would one day purchase a flat of her own in an exclusive high-rise building.
After finally raising enough money to finalize the purchase, the owners unexpectedly raise the price of the apartment. Driven to desperation, the woman decides to go to whatever lengths necessary to get her home, including murder.
Fans of more extreme horror and gore will find a lot to love amid the dark satire of rising social anxiety related to housing and recession. The film doesn’t hold back with sequences are that both disturbing and brutal.

Them (2006)
Also titled "Ils”, this dark French horror film actually helped inspire another successful home invasion movie to come after it, The Strangers (2008). It follows Clementine and Lucas, who live in an isolated country home. When strange noises abruptly wake them, they find their car stolen, the lights shut off, and the phones disconnected as a group of intruders begin to terrorize the couple throughout the night.
The story is loosely based on the real life story of an Austrian couple who were murdered while vacationing in Romania. Unlike other films on this list, Them thrives more on tension and atmosphere rather than explicit gore, which will make it more of a slow burn to some, but fans of movies like The Strangers will definitely appreciate this French entry into the genre.

Hush (2016)
Mike Flanagan has certainly made his name in the horror genre, but a few of his films still get sorely overlooked by audiences. Hush is his twisted take on home invasion with a unique set of obstacles. Played by Kate Segal, a woman named Maddie, a deaf and mute horror author decides to retreat from the city and live alone in an isolated cottage in the woods. Her new home becomes a nightmare when a masked attacker breaks in. Unable to hear the intruder lurking in the shadows or even speak to call for help, she has to find a way to evade the stranger and save herself.
By taking away Maddie’s ability to hear, Flanagan uses sound and atmosphere to the fullest in this film to ramp up the anxiety of hearing and seeing a hidden villain in ways that our main character cannot.

Incident in a Ghostland (2018)
This French shocker is helmed by the director of Martyrs (2008), which may tell you much of what you need to know before embarking on this film. The movie begins by introducing a woman named Pauline and her 2 daughters, Beth and Vera, who just moved into a house inherited from their deceased aunt. During the first night in their new home, 2 psychopaths break-in causing Pauline to go to extreme measures to save her family. Sixteen years later, Beth has grown into a famous horror author, while Vera is trapped in her childhood trauma and unable to cope. When Beth is called back to the family home still inhabited by her mother and sister, a series of strange events begins and ghosts of the past return to haunt her.
Incident in a Ghostland begins as a fairly standard home invasion horror, but morphs into something completely different and arguably more sinister with a dark and extremely bleak twist.

Inside (2007)
Inside is another shocking French horror movie driven by graphic violence and over the top feminine rage. The film begins with Sarah, a pregnant woman, who tragically loses her husband in a car accident. Months later, it’s Christmas Eve, as well as the eve of the birth of her new baby. Despite concerns from family and friends, Sarah decides to spend her final child-free night alone in her own home.
The night is violently disrupted when a mysterious woman, known only as La Femme in the film, arrives knocking at the door demanding to get in. It becomes immediately clear that this woman wants something from Sarah will do anything to get it.
Inside falls squarely in the splatter horror genre, which rightfully earned it both praise and criticism for its violent and graphic sequences. If you’re looking for a gorefest, this film is the one for you, but underneath the blood is an extreme glimpse of grief and revenge.
